The Adoption Process

Often times a parrot owner can no longer care for the demands of their feathered friend, and must find a new home for him/her. That’s where Houston Texas Parrot Rescue and Adoption steps in to help. It is our job to take these birds in, rehab them both physically and emotionally/behaviorally and then find them a new home.

Once the birds have completed their quarantine and then rehabilitation, we begin the process of trying to find them the best home possible. We do not adopt birds to just anyone, and we are NOT in the business for the money. We are a small home operated organization whose primary concern is the welfare of these intelligent, long-lived, majestic creatures. We provide a service to find the best possible living situation for each surrendered parrot.

There are a number of steps in the process of finding a suitable new home for a parrot. First, the owner must fill out a Bird Surrender Application/contract. This form includes a brief parrot history, as well as transfer of ownership to Houston Texas Parrot Rescue and Adoption Once ownership has been transferred the bird is then housed either at our home, or at an approved foster home. Medical/physical evaluations are performed, and the parrot’s history is assessed. The evaluations determine if medical treatment, dietary change, behavior modification or another rehab is required. We then assist with any necessary changes. During the bird’s stay at Houston Texas Parrot Rescue and Adoption we also work on socialization skills. Most pet parrots’ bond to their owners and are often aggressive towards others. Through proper socialization and the use of positive reinforcement and training, these parrots can become less discriminate and in turn are friendlier to a variety of people.

Parrots available for adoption are featured on our Facebook page. Interested candidates who believe they qualify for ALL of our policies must contact Houston Texas Parrot Rescue and Adoption by filling out an Adoption Application. This form asks a variety of questions to determine whether or not the person is experienced and/or knowledgeable. The application also helps us to fit the bird into the proper environment and schedule it will be most comfortable with. Applicants are then interviewed over the phone. Again, many questions are both asked and answered. If the candidate fails to meet our standards, in some cases we offer pet bird education and training. If we feel the applicant may be suitable, we proceed to the next step. Depending on the individual situation and location of applicant, one or more of the following will be scheduled: an interview in person, a home inspection, a visitation between the applicant and the parrot or a training session for the applicant. Once a match has been made between applicant and parrot, an Adoption Contract is signed, an Adoption fee is paid and transportation is arranged.

Houston Texas Parrot Rescue and Adoption may from time to time offer post-adoption education, training and counseling to the new owner. We also suggest that each new adoptive parent seeks different types of training classes that might be available to him/her. Companies such as Good Bird Inc offers some very good DVD’s and books for in-home training as well. We require each new adoptive parent to agree to allow Houston Texas Parrot Rescue and Adoption to remain in contact (including home checks if desired) for three full years. We also provide information and updates to the previous owner upon request.
