Some of Our Policies for Adoption & Surrender

1.  We do not adopt outside the Houston area. We have had a very bad situation with this in the past and have learned our lesson. There are always special exceptions, but they are rare.

2.  In an effort to avoid bargain basement bird shoppers and bird flippers we do not disclose the adoption fees until after an application is received and a potential match is made.

3.  We will perform home inspections.  You must have:

  • A cage meeting the requirements we provide you. Just because a cage meets the minimum standard for the species does not mean it is what is best for a specific bird.

  • Absolutely NO cages with rust will be considered acceptable. Rust is toxic to birds.

  • We can assist a potential new adoption parent in locating appropriate cage.

  • Proper feed and/or vitamins the specific bird might need. We can assist with this as well.

  • Location, lighting, and environment the bird will be kept is important.

4. You must be at least 21 years old to adopt a bird.
5. If you live in an apartment we may ask for written permission from the leasing office stating it is ok for you to have a bird.
6. Our birds are not free. We spend on average 3x the amount we receive for a bird. If you are looking for a cheap bird, this isn't a good fit for you. A bird is never cheap.
7. We are available to educate and help you with your bird if you are considering surrendering due to the birds behavior. We also understand if you do not wish to do this.
8. We provide life time support and education for our adoptive parents. However, prior to attempting to adopt do some research on your own. This shows us that you are serious about taking GOOD care of the bird.
9. We will not accept a surrender without a surrender form. NO EXCEPTIONS EVER.
10. Respect and kindness are required to be considered.

PLEASE READ OUR PAGE NOTES AND PINNED POSTS. It is very discouraging for a potential adopter to ask questions that have been answered already on our page. By not taking the time to read our page, or completing an adoption application, it gives the impression of an impulse purchase. When we receive questions like “how much?”, “Do you ship”, “Where are you located”, etc. we are less likely to consider your inquiry.

There is so much more we take into consideration that it's impossible to list everything. We want to be sure everyone knows we love our birds and want to make the perfect match for them and you. So if you are not chosen please don't take it personally. There are a lot of moving pieces to find the perfect match. At the end of the day is ALWAYS about what is in the best interest of the bird.

Forever Fid Love,
HTPRA
