Houston Texas Parrot Rescue & Adoption
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Are bird from Houston Texas Parrot Rescue and Adoption cheap?
A: Birds are very expensive to care for and maintain. Our owners spend, on average, 3x the adoption fee on each bird that comes into the rescue. Birds are not cheap. We try to maintain reasonable adoption fees for the species, age, and demeanor of a bird (among many other factors). Adoption fees are not negotiable.

Q: I have never owned a bird before. Can I still adopt?
A: YES. We are happy to assist with education on parrot ownership. We can provide many resources to help you become as educated as possible for a forever feather friend.

Q: How long do parrots live?
A: Depending on the species, parrots can live up to 80 years old.
Q: Can I still adopt if I live outside the Houston area?
A: While we do prefer to adopt to residents in the Houston area, we will not turn away a perfect forever home if you are slightly outside our area. However, we DO NOT SHIP and it must be within the state of Texas. Also, we will always favor a local home vs. a longer distance one.

Q: If I am under the age of 21 can I adopt?
A: NO. We only adopt to adults 21 years of age and older.

Q: Do you have birds that can talk?
A: Please consider this question carefully. If you are looking for specifics in a bird and not as much focused on rescuing a bird in need, Houston Texas Parrot Rescue and Adoption may not be the right place for you. With that being said, almost all parrots can talk to some degree or another. Some may simply choose not to.

Q: Can I adopt a bird for a friend?
A: NO. Only the person that will be the primary care giver can adopt. No exceptions.

Q: Can I just drop a bird off to you that I can no longer care for?
A: While we are happy to take in almost every parrot, you must submit a Surrender Form with the bird. We have our normal form, and a short form for those that do not know much about the bird.

Q: Can I come visit one of your locations to see what you have available.
A: NO. We do rarely make exceptions, but please understand we are HOME OWNED AND OPERATED. Meaning we keep the birds in our homes with us and our families. We do not have a store. If you would like to meet and greet several species to see what you like best we can recommend reputable pet stores in the Houston area.

Q: Can I come visit my surrendered bird?
A: NO. Again, we are HOME OWNED AND OPERATED. There also is no guarantee how long we will have your surrendered bird. There are situations where the rescue decides to keep the bird, but that still does not guarantee you can visit it. Once you surrender a bird you are turning ownership over to Houston Texas Parrot Rescue and Adoption, permanently.

Q: Once my surrendered bird is adopted can I have the details of the person who adopted it?
A: NO. That is a violation of privacy. We can however, provide the new adoptive owner with your name and number and they can contact you if they wish. This is not a guarantee that you will be contacted.

Q: Can I adopt a bird that is the same species but opposite gender?
A: NO. We do not allow opposite gender same species to be placed together.

Q: I no longer can care for the bird I adopted from Houston Texas Parrot Rescue and Adoption. Can I rehome it?
A: NO. If you adopt a bird from Houston Texas Parrot Rescue and Adoption and need to rehome for any reason, the bird must be RETURNED TO US.

Q: I cannot afford the full adoption fee. Will you hold the bird for me.
A: We require half the adoption fee down to hold a bird and the balance must be paid (funds cleared through our bank), and you must take possession of the bird within a period of time specified by Houston Texas Parrot Rescue and Adoption. This time frame can vary from adoption to adoption.
